If you do one walk in Sydney, make it this one. The Bondi to Coogee coastal walk strings together five beaches, a string of ocean pools and some of the best clifftop views in the city — and it's completely free. Here's how a local does it.
The basics: distance & time
It's about 6km one way and takes roughly two hours at a relaxed pace — longer with swims, coffee and photos (and you'll want all three). The path is paved and well-signed but has plenty of steps and a few hills; comfortable shoes beat thongs.
Which way to walk it
Walk Bondi → Coogee (north to south). Why? You start at the famous beach while you're fresh, the sun's at your back for photos in the morning, and you finish at relaxed Coogee where it's easy to grab a drink and a bus or rideshare home.
The route, beach by beach
- Bondi Beach — start at the south end near the Icebergs pool. Look back for the classic Bondi shot.
- Tamarama — "Glamarama", a tiny, pretty cove a short stroll on.
- Bronte — a great-coffee, great-park stop with a famous "bogey hole" ocean pool. A good place to pause.
- Clovelly — a narrow, calm inlet that's one of Sydney's best easy snorkels.
- Gordons Bay — a hidden boat-dotted cove and underwater nature trail.
- Coogee — the finish: a broad family beach with grassy headlands and the lovely Wylie's and McIver's ocean baths nearby.
Best time to go
Early morning is golden — cooler, quieter and beautifully lit. Avoid the middle of a hot summer day when the clifftops bake and the path is busiest. The walk is spectacular year-round; in winter you might even spot migrating whales offshore.
Getting there & back
To the start: bus or train-plus-bus to Bondi Beach (the 333 and 380 buses run from the city; or train to Bondi Junction then a short bus). From the finish at Coogee, frequent buses head back to the city and Bondi Junction. Driving and parking near Bondi on a sunny day is best avoided.
