Three to four days covers the harbour icons, a beach day, the coastal walk, the galleries and a couple of great meals. A week allows day trips to the Blue Mountains.

Spring (Sep–Nov) and autumn (Mar–May) are the sweet spot — warm, settled and less crowded. Summer is hot and beach-perfect but busy; winter is mild, cheaper and great for whale watching and Vivid. See See & Do.

Vivid is the city's free light, music and ideas festival, running for about three weeks across late May and June. The Opera House and harbour light up after dark, with installations around Circular Quay, The Rocks and Barangaroo.

The Blue Mountains (~90 min by train), the Hunter Valley wine region, and the Royal National Park to the south are all easy day trips, as are the Northern Beaches by ferry and bus. A week leaves room for at least one. More in See & Do.

Bondi is the most famous, but Manly, family-friendly Coogee, pretty Bronte and sheltered Shelly each have their fans — surf, calm water or a coastal walk. See Beaches.

Yes, in the warmer months — sea temps reach a comfortable 21–24°C from about December to April, with summer the prime beach season. It cools in winter but stays swimmable for the hardy, and patrolled beaches have ocean pools too. See Beaches.

A ~6km clifftop path linking Bondi, Tamarama, Bronte, Clovelly and Coogee — about two hours, and one of Sydney's best free experiences. Full guide here.

Trains, buses, ferries and light rail, all paid with an Opal card or contactless card/phone. Ferries are the most scenic; trains are fastest across the city.

Opal is the tap-on, tap-off card for trains, buses, ferries and light rail across Greater Sydney. Buy and top up at stations and convenience stores, or just tap a contactless card or phone instead — same fares. Daily and weekly caps make travel cheaper the more you go.

Airport Link train (~15 min to the CBD), taxi/rideshare (20–30 min), or a pre-booked private transfer for a fixed price. The train is usually fastest at peak times.

It's one of Australia's pricier cities, but very doable on a budget. The coastal walks, beaches, Botanic Garden and harbour ferries are free or cheap, and a casual meal or good coffee won't break the bank. Accommodation and a night out are where costs add up, so book stays early.
