Sydney has a reputation for being pricey — but some of its very best experiences cost nothing at all. Here's how a local fills a day in the harbour city without opening their wallet.
Walk across the Harbour Bridge
You don't have to climb it to enjoy it. The pedestrian path along the eastern side of the Sydney Harbour Bridge is free and open, with huge views down the harbour. Climb the Pylon Lookout for a small fee, or just walk to the middle and back — it's one of the great free city walks anywhere.
Wander the Royal Botanic Garden
The Royal Botanic Garden wraps around the harbour right beside the Opera House — free, open daily, and gorgeous. Walk out to Mrs Macquarie's Chair for the classic photo of the Opera House and Bridge lined up together.
See world-class art for free
The Art Gallery of NSW — including its striking new Sydney Modern wing — is free to enter, as is the Museum of Contemporary Art at Circular Quay. Two world-class collections, no ticket required.
Do a coastal (or harbour) walk
The Bondi to Coogee clifftop walk is the famous one (see our full guide), but the harbour-side Spit to Manly walk is its equal — bushland, hidden beaches and Bridge views. Both free, both unforgettable.
Hit the beach
Every ocean beach in Sydney is free — Bondi, Manly, Coogee, Bronte and dozens more. Swim between the flags, walk the sand, or just watch the surf. The ocean pools (Bondi Icebergs aside) are mostly free too. See our beaches guide.
Explore The Rocks & the markets
Wander the sandstone laneways of The Rocks, Sydney's oldest quarter, and time it for the weekend Rocks Markets. Window-shopping, history and harbour views — all free.
Ride a ferry (almost free)
Okay, not quite free — but for the price of an Opal tap, the ferry to Manly or Watsons Bay is the cheapest harbour cruise in the world. It's the local move, and the views are priceless.
