You can't see all of Sydney in a day — but you can have a perfect one. This is the route a local would take a visitor on: harbour first, beach in the middle, and the city lights to finish. Pack your togs and a good pair of shoes.

7:30am — Coffee & the Botanic Garden

Start with a proper flat white near Circular Quay, then walk into the Royal Botanic Garden before the crowds. Follow the harbour edge to Mrs Macquarie's Chair for the postcard shot — the Opera House and the Bridge lined up together, with the morning light behind you.

9:00am — The Opera House & The Rocks

Wander back past the Opera House (a guided tour gets you inside the sails) and around to The Rocks — Sydney's oldest quarter, all sandstone laneways and history. If you've a head for heights, this is where BridgeClimb launches up the arch. See our See & Do guide.

10:30am — Ferry across the harbour

Here's the local secret: the best "harbour cruise" is just a ferry. Tap on at Circular Quay and ride to Manly (30 glorious minutes) or hop to Taronga Zoo. The views cost the price of an Opal tap.

12:30pm — Bondi & a swim

Cross town to Bondi Beach for the city's most famous swim. Get between the flags, cool off, then claim a spot on the sand. Hungry? Lunch with a view at Icebergs above the pool, or grab something casual on Campbell Parade.

2:00pm — The Bondi to Coogee walk

Walk off lunch along the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk — clifftops, pocket beaches and ocean pools the whole way. Do as much or as little as you like; Bronte (a quick stop) and Clovelly (a great snorkel) are both highlights. Our full walk guide has the details.

5:00pm — Back to the harbour for sunset

Head back toward the water as the light turns gold. A drink at a rooftop or harbour bar around The Rocks or Barangaroo is the perfect reset before dinner — watch the ferries crisscross the cove.

7:30pm — A harbourside dinner

Finish big: a celebration dinner at Quay with the Opera House lit up across the water, or something livelier in the CBD or Surry Hills. The Eat & Drink guide has the shortlist.

Staying over? Base yourself at The Rocks or Circular Quay and most of this day is walkable — see our Stay guide.
